When you’re replacing heating lamps in a PET blow molding machine, you can’t just look at the wattage and call it a day. It’s a bit more complicated than that. We’ve spent a lot of time making sure our lamps actually fit the Sidel lineup—everything from those old-school SBO units to the newer Matrix series. The struggle with switching series If you’re moving from an SBO setup to a Matrix system, you’ll notice the lamp shapes and electrical loads change. It can be a headache. We fixed that by standardizing the footprint and connectors. These are true drop-in replacements. You won’t have to mess around with the lamp holders or spend your afternoon rewiring control cabinets. We also obsessed over the quartz tube tolerances. They slide right into the reflectors without any tension, which means they won’t snap when things start heating up and expanding. A word on heat and power These lamps use high-voltage circuits to get that shortwave IR radiation needed to heat PET preforms. Now, more wattage usually means you can push more product through the line. But there’s a catch. If you go higher than the original OEM specs, your power supply is going to feel the strain. Plus, you’ve got to make sure your cooling fans are spotless and humming along. If they’re clogged with dust, those lamp holders can literally melt. What they’re actually made of We use high-purity quartz glass because the blow molding process is brutal—constant heating and cooling. Inside, the tungsten filaments are tuned specifically for PET polymers. This makes sure the heat sinks deep into the preform wall evenly. No “cold spots.” No weird thin walls in your finished bottles. Just a consistent product. The one thing that ruins everything Here is the real-world truth: even a perfect lamp can fail in hours if you’re not careful. Fingerprints are the enemy. A single smudge of oil from your skin on the quartz tube creates a hot spot. That hot spot leads to a failure, and suddenly you’re replacing a burnt-out lamp again. Do yourself a favor—grab some isopropyl alcohol and wipe the tubes down before you wire them in. It takes ten seconds and saves you a massive headache later.
