Getting the Heat Right for PET Preforms
When you’re heating a PET preform, the goal isn’t just to make the surface hot. That’s a rookie mistake. You need that infrared energy to actually sink deep into the plastic wall without torching the outside. If you’re running Sidel SBO 20 Series 2 or Husky HyPET high-speed lines, that’s exactly why we built our replacement lamps the way we did.
The science of the “deep soak”
Here is the thing: to get heat to pierce through the wall quickly, you need short-wave infrared (SWIR). We play around with specific quartz blends and halogen fills to make sure the light spectrum is hitting exactly where it needs to. It’s a balancing act. If the power density is too low, you end up with cold spots and bottles with wonky wall thickness. But push it too hard? You’ll burn the resin. We spec these tubes to hit that sweet spot right in the middle.
No headaches during install
These are simple drop-in replacements. We kept the footprint exactly the same as the OEM parts, so they slide right into your existing oven racks. No hacking, no modifying, no stress. Depending on your SBO 20 setup, we use R7s or SK15 connectors. We do this to make sure you get a tight electrical connection that won’t arc when things get intense during high-load cycles. And about the glass—we use heavy-wall quartz. Why? Because we’ve seen those cheap tubes shatter the second the cooling fans kick in. Ours can take the beating of constant thermal cycling without cracking.
A quick heads-up on the trade-offs
These lamps pack a massive punch of heat density. That means your cycle times get faster, which is great. But, it does put a bit more pressure on your oven’s ventilation. If your cooling blowers are clogged with dust or just aren’t pulling their weight, the ambient temperature inside the oven will spike. That’s a fast track to burning out your lamps early. Just keep your airflow clear, and these tubes will last you a long time. Once you’ve got them wired up and your power settings dialed in, you’ll notice the heat profile across the preform is just… consistent. And that’s how it should be.
