
Getting Your Bake Just Right
If you’ve ever spent a morning fighting with an oven, you know that bread is picky. A single degree of difference can be the gap between a perfect golden-brown crust and something you have to throw in the bin. To hit that sweet spot, we rely on short-wave infrared tubes. Think of them as the heavy hitters of the kitchen—way more powerful than your average bulb, built specifically to kick out heat the second you need it. The nitty-gritty on power When picking a replacement, you’ve got to look at the wattage and voltage. It’s not just about numbers on a page. Higher wattage means your oven bounces back faster after you’ve opened the door to check your loaves. But here’s the catch: it has to fit perfectly. We’re talking millimeters. If the length or the connector—usually an R7s or SK15—is even slightly off, you’re asking for trouble. Loose connections cause arcing, and that’s a fast track to burning out your terminals. Why quartz and halogen matter Most of these tubes are made from high-purity quartz. Why? Because it can take the shock of heating up and cooling down rapidly without just snapping. We also use halogen gas inside. It basically acts like a bodyguard for the tungsten filament, pushing evaporated metal back onto the wire so it doesn’t get thin and snap prematurely. It just lasts longer. Simple as that. A few things to watch out for More heat sounds great, but it puts a lot of pressure on your gear. If you decide to jump to a higher wattage to speed up your bake, please check your wiring and relays first. If the circuit can’t handle the load, you’ll be tripping breakers or, worse, smelling melted insulation. And one last pro tip:don’t touch the glass with your bare hands. The oils from your skin leave invisible spots on the quartz. When the oven hits high heat, those spots create “hot zones” that can make the glass crack. Give the tube a quick wipe with some alcohol before you plug it in, and you’ll be good to go.
