
Getting the Heat Right (Without Blinding Your Brood)
When you’re picking out a heater for a chicken coop or a nursery, you’re doing more than just fighting a chill. You’re actually dealing with light. See, standard infrared lamps are kind of aggressive. They blast out everything—visible light, UV, you name it. For a baby chick or a newborn, that’s way too much. It stresses their eyes and messes with their sleep. We handle this by shifting the light spectrum.
The Secret is in the Coating
We put a special coating on the quartz glass to block those harsh blue-light peaks. It gives the light a “soft” feel. But this isn’t about making it look pretty. It’s about physics. By blocking the short wavelengths, we push all that energy into the long-wave infrared band. That way, the heat actually sinks into the skin or feathers without hammering the optic nerve.
Keeping Things Safe
These units run on low wattage. We do that on purpose to stop hotspots from popping up. You won’t find those scary heat spikes you see in industrial drying tubes here. Instead, the filament stays at a steady, gentle temperature. Just a heads-up: make sure you wire these into a system with a solid thermal cutout. If a lamp gets too close to some bedding or skin, things can go south quickly. Better safe than sorry.
The Trade-off
Here’s the honest part. Filtered infrared is a lifesaver for eye protection, but you do give up a little bit of raw power compared to a clear halogen lamp. To get the same amount of heat, you might need to add a few more lamps to your setup. Your gear takes up a bit more space, sure. But it’s worth it to know your brood isn’t risking permanent eye damage. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
